It’s the end of July, and if there’s one thing we’ve relearned this month, it’s this:
“Growth doesn’t just happen. You build it, and your HR strategy has everything to do with it.”
It’s easy to get caught up in the race, filling urgent roles, moving fast, meeting demand. But July reminded us of something deeper:
HR isn’t just about getting people in. It’s about keeping the right people growing, and aligning that growth with where your business is going.
This month at Doheney, the conversation shifted from hiring to scaling, filling roles to retaining top performers, and activity to alignment.
We asked a tough but necessary question:
“Is your HR strategy helping your company grow, or just keeping things running?”
We spent the month exploring what it means to design HR systems that don’t just support day-to-day operations, but actually fuel long-term momentum. And we didn’t just float big ideas, we broke them down into practical, usable insights.
In our featured article, we encouraged leaders to examine whether their onboarding, performance management, and retention strategies were still fit for purpose, or quietly outdated. Because if your HR structure was built for a company you no longer are, it may be doing more harm than good.
And from that conversation came others.
We unpacked what scaling a healthy culture means, especially when growth threatens to dilute clarity, connection, or shared values. We asked:
What habits and rituals are worth preserving? And which ones are quietly getting in the way of who you’re becoming?
We also identified a few telltale signs that it might be time to recalibrate:
▪️Frequent turnover in the first 90 days
▪️Misalignment between what’s said in leadership meetings and what’s felt on the floor
▪️Teams are busy, but not necessarily productive
And finally, we looked at onboarding, not as a checklist, but as a first impression. It’s the beginning of your company’s long-term relationship with every new hire. And when done right, it sets the tone for engagement, retention, and performance down the line.
What Else We Unpacked This Month
We shared thoughts on how performance reviews can be more than routine check-ins, but real conversations that drive clarity and growth. We looked at how HR teams can build systems that scale with the business instead of being left behind by it. And we reflected on what it means to create a responsive HR structure, and not a reactive one.
